KIDS MOTIONAL LITERACY

& modern creative

Performance

Philosophy:

Our education philosophy is focused on melding both physical and emotional techniques and guiding students through the process of self-discovery as maturing and well-rounded people. Movement is presented and taught through feeling and emotion, not only through shape and line. The authentic presence of the student is brought to the forefront of class consciousness, discussed, and explored. We strive for students to experience being an integral group member; valued, respected, and heard by others, emulating ARD’s creation and rehearsal process. Our goal is for students to gain an understanding of their bodies in space and to express themselves through movement.

kids motional literacy:

Ariel Rivka Dance offers Motional Literacy as a movement technique workshop that invites children of all ages and abilities to explore movement in a safe and welcoming environment.  The workshop provides movement practices that help students productively release stress, find their unique self expression, discover their innate creativity and connect as a community. Participants are given practice and guidelines for implementing the techniques that allow empowerment and self-care which one can apply to a particular environment or academic obstacle. This approach has built a new community of movers who aren't necessarily in search of a path towards professional dancing, but one that offers a safe space to express themselves through movement, organize the body and mind, and discover the emotional benefits of dance.

modern creative performance:

Foundation: Students begin to build a foundation in Modern dance using various Modern and Jazz dance forms. Body coordination, control, dexterity, and vocabulary are the class focuses. Techniques such as Horton, Limón, Graham, Luigi, and Jack Cole are referenced.

  • The Elements of Dance, including direction, shape, time, space, body parts, and effort are implemented into activities and improvisations.

Collaboration: Teachers provide a choreographic framework and prompt students to create movement for an original dance.

Expression: Students are guided through movements that explore, engage, and identify emotions. The class embodies different emotions and finds personal connections to emotions through movement.

Connection: Students make connections between dance and everyday life, making dance a relevant and personal mode of expression. The class is encouraged to pull from their own cultural resources, especially during movement creation and collaboration.

Our Modern Creative Performance class allows participating students to have the exciting opportunity of performing on stage alongside Ariel Rivka Dance (ARD) in our annual season performance! Students will have the chance to perform class choreography on the big stage alongside their teacher! This performance showcases our students' growth through the semester, class creativity, self-expression, and build community. This special performance will take place in early June in Manhattan (date and location to come).
