About the Event: In this special selection prepared as part of the Istanbul Fringe Festival 2021, you can watch 4 different short dance shows from 4 different countries;

Oblivion (Silvia Batet) / Spain – 16 Minutes

Oblivion is a word that means "to be forgotten" but can also be associated with the concept of "purgatory". Based on a dreamlike world between fantasy and surrealism, Oblivion is an image of the afterlife described by Dante in The Divine Comedy. A void defined by the idea of the circle, where bodies wander endlessly in the void; but also a place of mental longing where we visit the memory of those who are no longer there. “Vacare” in Latin means to wander, to fly; but it also means "to be empty". After all, life after death and oblivion can easily be the same thing.

  • Choreographer / Director: Silvia Batet

  • Dancers: Marta García, Vera Palomino, Anna Serra, Pere Seda, Raquel Romero

  • Light Design: Quim Algora

Unorthodox (Ariel Rivka) / USA – 9 Minutes

Collaborating with composer Stefania de Kenessey to create an original composition inspired by the impulse and tradition of Klezmer music, the piece juxtaposes raw reality with the gentle versions we usually show to the world. What happens when you unzip the dress to breathe? The title is inspired by the book of the same name, which was recently adapted into a Netflix series about a woman who leaves a strict Hasidic community.

  • Choreographer: Ariel Rivka

  • Original Composition: Stefania De Kenessey

  • Film & Cinematography & Editing: Melissa Wu

  • Costume: Ariel Rivka

  • Dancers: Caitlyn Casson, Kristin Licata, Casie O'Kane, Hana Ginsburg Tirosh

Momento (Miller De Nobili) / Germany – 10 Minutes “Momento” is a short dance piece resulting from a collaboration between Dresden-based choreographers Maria Chiara de' Nobili and Alexander Miller. Created during the pandemic, the piece focuses on a non-chronological series of moments that define a couple's life. Memories follow each other in a chaotic manner. All conflicts are resolved by accepting what really matters. After a long journey through the re-enactment of a lifetime of shared experiences, the characters find each other somewhere between the innocence of the past and the uncertainty of the future.

  • Choreography / Dance: Maria Chiara de' Nobili & Alexander Miller

  • Music: Freya Arde

  • Camera: Patrick Schwarz

  • Camera Assistant: Odbayar Batsuuri

  • Light Design: Geohwan Ju

  • Prop Driver: Philip Lehmann

Wabi-Sabi (KOMOCO) / Italy – 20 Minutes "Up and down are one and the same. He had to go down into his own depths and stay there: in that inner darkness without shelter, hopelessly. It was the only way to get him up. […] No one wants to suffer, but the luckiest among us learn from our suffering. Clearly, with joy, all we become aware of the cause of suffering: we remember pain instead of sleep - there is a fierce grace that shapes our hands. Humility comes as a natural consequence. We learn to lose control: we discover that we are actually not in control from the start. It is total surrender to what is. […] Like a tree that drops its leaves : standing still in the cold winter, completely exposed, completely surrendered.” ~ Joseph and the Path of Forgiveness by Stephen Mitchell ~

  • Choreographer: Sofia Nappi

  • Dancers: Sofia Nappi, Paolo Piancastelli, Adriano Popolo Rubbio

  • Format: Online – Video Streaming

  • Duration: Total 60 Minutes at Genre Theater
